Dog Attacks and Injures Two People
A dog owner will likely face charges after his pit bull attacked a father and his daughter over the weekend at a park. According to a CBS News report, the attack occurred when the daughter was walking her friend’s dog near her parents’ home. The pit bull first attacked the dog and then bit the girl and her father. The daughter suffered a broken finger while her father sustained puncture wounds. Officials expect that the dog’s owner will face criminal charges.
Washington State has a “strict liability statute” when it comes to dog attacks. What this means is that dog owners whose animals attack and injure another person can be held liable for the actions of their pets. The only exception to this law is when a dog attacks someone who is trespassing or trying to commit a crime on the owner’s property such as a burglar. Dog bite victims may seek compensation to cover the cost of medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, plastic surgery and other expenses related to the dog attack. If the dog fatally injures the victim, their family may file a wrongful death claim against the owner of the dog.
