Seattle Humane Society Spays and Neuters Pit Bulls For Free

By Washington Animal Bite Attorney on February 19, 2010

A new program in King County is helping pit bull owners spay and neuter their pit bulls for free, thanks to a $50,000 grant from Petsmart charities. According to a King5 News report, the program is being offered by the Seattle Humane Society. Their funding covers the cost for 750 pit bulls or pit bull mixes to be spayed, neutered and vaccinated. Pit bulls and pit bull mixes constitute about 30 percent of animals found in shelters. More than 50 pit bull owners have already signed up for the program. If you are interested, please call 425-649-7560 to schedule an appointment for your pit bull.

Studies have shown that pit bulls tend to “act up” when they have not been spayed or neutered. Pit bulls have also been known to get extremely aggressive. A good number of pit bull owners do not fix their dogs because they breed them. However, this can turn out to be dangerous for the dog owner’s neighborhood. As an experienced Washington dog bite injury attorney, Kirk Bernard is familiar with how breeding dogs, especially pit bulls, are usually involved in more dog attacks than dogs that have been spayed or neutered.

Washington State has a strict liability statute when it comes to dog bites. What this means is that the dog owner is liable – whether or not the dog attack occurs on public or private property, and whether or not the dog owner was aware of the dog’s prior viciousness. According to the Revised Code of Washington Section 16.08.040: “The owner of any dog which shall bite any person while such person is in or on a public place or lawfully in or on a private place including the property of the owner of such dog, shall be liable for such damages as may be suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of such dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.”
