What To Do If A Dog Is Going to Attack

Washington dog bites and dog attacks can be devastating to the victim, and may cause serious injuries, permanent disabilities, scaring and disfigurement, and in the most severe situations, even death.

Being able to identify when a dog is going to attack, and attempting to resolve the situation beforehand may be a person’s best way to avoid a dog attack. If you are familiar with a dog’s body language, you may be able to see when a dog is showing signs of feeling threatened or aggressive.

If you are near a dog whose body suddenly stiffens, shows its teeth, or the dog starts looking around or stares at you, the dog may see you as a threat and may be on the verge of attack. The LAST thing you want to do in this type of situation is scream or run, because that may cause the dog to instinctually chase you. Do not attempt to pet the dog or get closer to the animal, rather you should remain still and confidently and loudly order the dog away. This may result in the dog leaving you alone, if it does not, you may want to back away very slowly leaving the dog’s territory.

The Bernard Law Group represents clients throughout the State of Washington, including the following areas:

In the event that the dog has been trained as an attack dog, you may be unable to prevent an attack. In some cases you may attempt to climb a nearby tree, jump over a fence to separate yourself from the dog, dodge the dog, or get away from the dog or prevent an attack in any way imaginable. If you areattacked by a dog in Seattle, and the dog has gotten a hold of your limb and has inserted his teeth, slowly move that part of your body toward the dog rather than away, which may minimize tearing wounds from the dog’s powerful jaw. You may also want to drop to the ground and curl into a ball, while protecting your head, face, and neck.

If you live on a street, or in an area where you regularly walk past large or aggressive dogs which are not restrained, it is suggested that you equip yourself with a large stick or pepper spray in the even of a possible dog attack. When walking by the aggressive dog, make sure that the pepper spray is in one hand and your walking stick is held strongly in your dominant hand; because you may not have much reaction time to try to protect yourself form a violent dog attack.
